The Presto Precise digital pressure canner deserves a closer look than most electric canners. It's a dedicated canner, not a multi-cooker with a canning button. It works by holding a target temperature rather than a pressure, and it comes from the company behind one of the best-known lines of stovetop canners. If any electric pressure canner deserves a serious look, it's this one.

It also comes with a caveat that every buyer should understand before spending premium money: Presto's claim that the Precise "meets USDA home canning guidelines" rests on Presto's own research. No USDA or university validation has been published. Below we cover how the canner works, compare all four current sizes using Presto's spec sheets, and lay out what the official sources actually say.

Quick Picks

  • Best Overall: Presto Precise 02153 23-Quart. Best for full 7-quart loads, 20 stacked pints and quart-size water bath canning.
  • Best Low-Profile: Presto Precise 02154 16-Quart. Best for 7 quarts in a 13.5-inch-tall body.
  • Best Stainless Pot: Presto Precise 02152 17-Quart. Best for a removable stainless steel pot you can wash in the sink.
  • Best Compact: Presto Precise 02144 12-Quart. Best for small batches of pints and half-pints.

The Four Presto Precise Models Compared

Model Best for Design Quarts (pressure) Regular pints (pressure) Quarts in water bath Power Height
02153 (23 qt) Most people Hybrid aluminum 7 20 (stacked) 7 1,100 W 17.0 in
02154 (16 qt) Low clearance Hybrid aluminum 7 10 None 1,100 W 13.5 in
02152 (17 qt) Stainless pot Original, removable stainless pot 5 8 5 1,485 W 18.0 in
02144 (12 qt) Small batches Original, removable nonstick pot 5 8 None 1,485 W 16.0 in

Every number above comes from Presto's spec sheets. The 17-quart has more liquid capacity than the 16-quart but holds fewer quarts. That's the design difference at work: the original models put a removable pot inside a stainless shroud, while the newer "hybrid" models use a heavy aluminum body and cover as the vessel.

Is the Presto Precise Safe? What the Official Sources Say

This is the part most reviews skip.

  • Presto's claim. Presto calls the Precise line "the first digital pressure canners that meet USDA home canning guidelines." The spec sheets add a footnote that neither the USDA nor the NCHFP certifies or approves home canning equipment. Presto also says its recipe book uses standard processing times in accordance with the USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning.
  • NCHFP via Kansas State University Extension, 2021. K-State wrote that the appliance "has not been evaluated by USDA or university research laboratory." It added that Presto did its own research, the extent of which isn't public. The NCHFP saw positives: Presto understands that a minimum internal temperature, not just a pressure, must be reached, and its manual gives complete instructions. It also flagged that the manual omits at least two USDA low-acid processes that need different canner or water-level requirements. Its advice was to follow Presto's manual rather than USDA directions with this canner.
  • Ask Extension, 2024. An extension food safety specialist wrote that newer Presto electric canners have procedures and pressurization and depressurization rates that align with USDA recommendations, while noting that Extension had collected no primary data on them.
  • NDSU Extension (FN2064, revised 2026). NDSU describes the Precise as sensing and responding to temperature, adjusting automatically at altitude. It advises following the canner's instructions with tested recipes.

Our read: the Precise is the most credible electric pressure canner available, but it hasn't been independently validated. The NCHFP's separate warning about canning in electric multi-cookers doesn't name the Precise, which is a dedicated canner. For the full electric landscape, see our electric pressure canner guide, and for the main multi-cooker rival, our Nesco pressure canner review.

How the Presto Precise Works

Presto's quickstart guide for the 23-quart lays out a seven-stage pressure canning cycle:

  1. Getting ready. Pour 3 quarts of water into the canner, up to the fill line. Choose Pressure Can and set the processing time for your recipe and jar size.
  2. Jar warming. Set jars half full of water on the rack. The canner preheats them for 20 to 40 minutes while you prepare the food.
  3. Fill jars. Fill one jar at a time, clean the rim and put on the lid and band.
  4. Venting. With the regulator off, the canner heats and vents for 10 minutes, matching the 10-minute venting the USDA requires for stovetop canners. Then it beeps for you to put the regulator on.
  5. Canning. Once it reaches the pressure canning temperature, the timer starts. Presto's materials say it holds 240°F (116°C) automatically.
  6. Cooling. Presto says cooling may take about 1.5 hours, with a final timed cool-down.
  7. Done. Confirm the air vent/cover lock has dropped, remove the regulator and cover, and lift the jars out upright. Check seals after 12 to 24 hours.

If something goes wrong, the canner shows an error code rather than silently carrying on. One example is E41, which Presto says means the canner didn't reach the proper canning temperature in the required time. That speaks to one of the NCHFP's stated concerns about electric appliances: a power surge or drop can lower the temperature without the user noticing.

The Models, Reviewed

1. Presto Precise 02153 23-Quart Digital Pressure Canner (Best Overall)

Who it's for: anyone who wants one electric appliance to replace both a pressure canner and a water bath pot.

This is the most capable Precise. It holds 7 quarts, 20 regular pints or 26 half-pints for pressure canning (pints and half-pints double-decked). In boiling water mode it holds 7 quarts, 10 pints or 13 half-pints. It draws 1,100 watts, stands 17 inches tall and weighs about 13.9 lb, roughly half the weight of the 17-quart. Like the stovetop Prestos, it uses a sealing ring and an overpressure plug, so budget for those wear parts.

Pros

  • Largest capacity of any Precise
  • Quart-size boiling water canning
  • Lower 1,100 W draw, light for its size
  • Clear stage display and error codes

Cons

  • Aluminum body isn't immersible, per Presto
  • One-year warranty

2. Presto Precise 02154 16-Quart Digital Pressure Canner (Best Low-Profile)

Who it's for: quart canners short on vertical space.

The 16-quart hybrid holds 7 quarts, 10 regular pints or 13 regular half-pints for pressure canning, in a body just 13.5 inches tall and about 13 lb. It's the best quarts-per-inch Precise. Like Presto's 16-quart stovetop model, it can't water-bath quarts; boiling water canning is pints and smaller only.

Pros

  • 7 quarts in the shortest Precise
  • 1,100 W draw
  • Lightest model in the line

Cons

  • Only 10 regular pints, no stacking of regular pints
  • No quarts in boiling water mode
  • One-year warranty

3. Presto Precise 02152 17-Quart Digital Pressure Canner (Best Stainless Pot)

Who it's for: people who want a removable pot they can scrub in the sink.

The 17-quart has a removable stainless steel pot and stainless rack inside a brushed stainless shroud. It holds 5 quarts or 8 regular pints for pressure canning, and 19 regular half-pints when double-decked. It also handles 5 quarts in boiling water mode. The trade-offs are weight and power: about 24.8 lb out of the box and 1,485 watts, which is about 12.4 amps on a 120-volt circuit. Give it an outlet that isn't sharing a load with a toaster or kettle.

Pros

  • Removable stainless pot and rack
  • Quarts for both pressure and boiling water canning
  • Tall interior for stacking half-pints

Cons

  • Only 5 quarts despite the 17-quart label
  • Heaviest and most power-hungry Precise
  • Premium price

4. Presto Precise 02144 12-Quart Digital Pressure Canner (Best Compact)

Who it's for: small households doing pints of beans or stock and half-pints of jam.

The 12-quart is the smallest Precise. It holds 5 quarts, 8 regular pints or 10 half-pints for pressure canning. For boiling water canning it takes 8 pints or 10 half-pints but no quarts. Its removable pot is nonstick inside and out, and Presto describes it as PFAS-free. It draws 1,485 watts. Presto's FAQ says there's no minimum jar load since 2022, so you can run a couple of jars when that's all you have.

Pros

  • Compact, with a removable nonstick pot
  • Small loads allowed
  • Lowest-priced Precise

Cons

  • No quarts in boiling water mode
  • 1,485 W draw
  • Only 5 quarts per load

Presto Precise vs Presto Stovetop

The 23-quart Precise and the 23-quart stovetop Presto (01781) hold exactly the same jars: 7 quarts, 20 pints or 26 half-pints. The digital version automates venting, temperature, timing and cool-down, frees a burner, and keeps the kitchen cooler. Presto says the canner holds the heat inside. The stovetop version costs well under half as much and carries a 12-year warranty instead of one. (Our best pressure canner roundup covers every stovetop option.) It also uses the processes the USDA and the NCHFP actually developed, with no manufacturer-only validation in between. You pay for the stovetop in attention: an annual gauge test and watching the dial. Our Presto pressure canner review covers the stovetop models.

Presto Precise Digital Pressure Canner Buying Guide

Size and jar mix

Think about how you can. If your year includes quarts of peaches or tomatoes in a water bath, only the 17- and 23-quart models take quarts in boiling water mode. If you pressure-can mostly quarts, the 16- and 23-quart each hold 7. If you live on pints, only the 23-quart stacks 20.

Original vs hybrid design

The original 12- and 17-quart models have a removable pot inside a stainless shroud. That makes them easy to clean, but they're heavier and draw 1,485 W. The hybrid 16- and 23-quart models use an aluminum body and cover as the vessel, draw 1,100 W and weigh about 13 to 14 lb, but Presto says they're not immersible.

Recipes: use the book

With a Precise, the instruction book is your recipe source. Presto's 23-quart quickstart says to use the manual "or reliable source, such as nchfp.uga.edu." The NCHFP cautioned in 2021, though, that some USDA low-acid processes with special canner or water requirements aren't in Presto's manual. If a USDA recipe has unusual canner instructions and Presto's book doesn't include it, don't adapt it on your own.

Altitude

Presto says no adjustment is needed. The canner targets 240°F and adjusts pressure on its own. That's a real convenience over a weighted-gauge stovetop canner, which must jump to 15 psi above 1,000 feet under the USDA's tables.

Power and placement

The 1,485 W models need a circuit without other big loads. All of them need counter space with room above for steam and for lifting the cover toward you, which Presto recommends to keep steam away from your face.

Wear parts and warranty

The Precise has a sealing ring and an overpressure plug like any Presto, and electronics that a stovetop canner doesn't. The warranty is one year.

How We Chose

We didn't test the Presto Precise. This review draws on Presto's spec sheets, product pages, canning FAQ and the 23-quart quickstart guide. We also used published statements from the NCHFP, Kansas State University Extension, NDSU Extension and an extension specialist's 2024 Ask Extension answer, plus recurring owner feedback about cycle length and cleanup. All capacities, dimensions and wattages come from Presto's own documents.

Use only tested recipes, and follow Presto's instructions for this canner exactly. If you're still deciding whether electric is for you, start with our guide to canning in a pressure cooker or Instant Pot, which explains why multi-cookers are a different story.

FAQ

Is the Presto Precise digital pressure canner USDA approved?

No home canner is USDA approved, because the USDA does not certify canning equipment, a point Presto prints on its own spec sheets. Presto says the Precise meets USDA home canning guidelines based on its own research. Kansas State University Extension reported in 2021 that it had not been evaluated by the USDA or a university lab.

Do you need to adjust the Presto Precise for altitude?

Presto says no. The canner senses temperature and holds 240°F, adjusting pressure automatically, so no altitude adjustment is needed when pressure canning. Follow the processing times in Presto's instruction book for your jar size.

How long does a Presto digital canner cycle take?

Longer than the processing time alone. Presto's quickstart guide for the 23-quart says jar warming takes 20 to 40 minutes, venting takes 10 minutes, and the cooling phase may take about 1.5 hours, on top of the recipe's processing time and heat-up.

Can you double-stack jars in the Presto Precise?

Yes, for some jar sizes when pressure canning. Presto's spec sheets show double-decked capacities, such as 20 regular pints in the 23-quart, and refer you to the manual for how to stack. Presto says not to double-deck jars for boiling water canning.

Is there a minimum number of jars for the Presto Precise?

Presto's canning FAQ says that as of 2022 no minimum jar load is required in the Precise, because its cool-down is slower than a stovetop canner's. Older manuals listed a minimum, so follow the current instructions for your model.

Which Presto Precise size should I buy?

The 23-quart (02153) suits most people: 7 quarts, 20 stacked pints and quart-size water bath canning. Choose the 16-quart (02154) for 7 quarts in a shorter body, the 17-quart (02152) for a removable stainless pot, or the 12-quart (02144) for small batches.

Verdict

The Presto Precise 02153 23-quart is the best Presto Precise digital pressure canner. It holds as much as a full-size stovetop canner, water-baths quarts and automates every stage. Buy it knowing that its USDA alignment is Presto's claim, not an independent validation. If you'd rather rely on USDA-tested processes, a stovetop Presto 23-quart costs far less and holds the same jars.
